Is it safe to touch grafts after a hair transplant?

The days and hours after undergoing a hair transplant are full of excitement and anxiety. You have put money into your confidence, and now you want to make sure that all of your follicles are still alive. The question is it is safe to touch grafts after a hair transplant?

The answer is in the short run: No, not now. Early touching, scratching, or picking of your new grafts may cause the follicles to come out permanently, causing empty spots. In this blog, we will divide the healing process and medical tips by Dr Naveed Azhar to make the after-treatment phase a little bit clearer.

Why the First 48 Hours are Non-Negotiable?

In the case of hair follicle transplantation, it is actually a living graft lodged into a small incision. It takes time for the body to create a blood supply and “anchor” that graft in place.

The grafts are so susceptible in the initial 48 to 72 hours. The slightest touch of a finger or a hat can blow the graft out. We recommend that patients at the Royal Cosmetic Surgery Clinic use a hands-off policy during this time in order to provide the highest possible graft survival rate.

The Healing Timeline & When Can You Touch?

Knowing the biological sticking point of your hair is important to a successful recovery. The following is a breakdown of the manner in which the grafts attach themselves:

Days Post-Op Status of Grafts Can You Touch?
Days 1–3 Extremely fragile; not yet anchored. Strictly No.
Days 4–6 Grafts begin to secure, and scabs form. Only during gentle washing.
Days 7–10 Grafts are mostly secure Gentle touching allowed.
Day 14+ Grafts are permanently anchored. Safe to touch/rub gently.

Professional Advice with Dr Naveed Azhar:

One of the most popular experts in the field of hair restoration is Dr Naveed Azhar, who states that the success of a transplant depends on the competence of doctors and on the care taken by the patient after the surgery, 50 and 50.

The danger zone usually ceases at around day 10, according to Dr Naveed Azhar. The skin by this time has healed over the incision, and the graft can no longer fall out. Picking, however, is different from touching. The inflammation or infection of the graft may occur even when the graft is safe, in the event that the scabs are picked.

The Risks of Premature Touching:

When you prematurely touch or pick at your grafts, you can get into three big complications:

  • Graft Loss: After a graft has been removed during the first 3 days, it cannot be replaced.
  • Infection: Bacteria are on your hands. Folliculitis can be caused by touching open micro-incisions.
  • Scarring: This may result in poor healing and scarring of the area, which destroys the natural appearance of the transplant.

How to Manage the Itch Without Touching?

With scalp healing, it will become itchy. This is one of the signs of recovery, though it can be frustrating. Instead of scratching:

  1. Apply Saline Spray: Spray the area with the Saline Spray supplied by the Royal Cosmetic Surgery Clinic to ensure that it is kept moist.
  2. Use antihistamines: In case of an itch that cannot be tolerated, you should consult your physician regarding the allergy medication that is available over the counter.
  3. Tapping: Only tap, lightly, the donor area (the back of the head), but not the recipient area.

Proper Washing Process?

  • You will also have to wash your hair by the end of day 4 or 5.
  • This is generally the initial time you will be touching the grafts.
  • Direct shower pressure should not be used.
  • Pour a cup of lukewarm water on the head.
  • Apply the shampoo in your hands and pat it on the grafts.
  • Do not rub.
  • Allow the suds to work.

Overview Rule!

The golden rule of hair transplant recovery is ‘in doubt, avoid touching’. Your grafts require tranquillity to develop into thick and natural hair that you have been fantasising about. After 14 days, you will be able to relax and get back to your routine. Do you have any concerns regarding your recovery?
