Dr. Umair Farrukh Raja is a graduate of de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore. He completed his housejob from Punjab Dental Hospital, his parent institute, in Feb’10. Soon after the completion of his housejob, Dr. Umair joined the postgraduate programme in Dental Public Health in King’s College London, UK. During his post-graduation, he also attained the highest postgraduate qualification offered by Royal College of Surgeons of England, DDPHRCS (Eng.), in the specialty of Dental Public Health.
During his postgraduate study programme, Dr. Umair also served as a research assistant in the Department of Dental Public Health at King’s College London. Furthermore, he was placed in the Welwyn Garden City National Health Services (NHS) Centre for a supervised placement with a NHS Dental Public Health consultant. Working within the NHS, Dr. Umair was able to hone his skills and apply his knowledge in a more practical manner. His research interests falls into the areas of quality of life assessment, evaluation of health services and social determinants of oral health. A focused interest is investigating & assessing the key oral conditions within Pakistan at a broader scale.
Dr. Umair has attended & presented at various national/international dental conferences including the BASCD (The British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry) conferences Nov’11 and April’12 in London, UK. More recently, his scientific paper was adjudged to be the 2nd best paper presented at 2nd ACDER Conference held in Islamabad in March 2013.
He has been a part of Islamabad Medical & Dental College, since January 2013, having joined as an Assistant Professor and Head of Department of Community Dentistry.
His passion for politics resulted in getting selected for the Youth Parliament of Pakistan in 2008-09. He chaired the Standing Committee on Education, Health & Environment during his tenure as member of Youth Parliament of Pakistan. In recognition of his work on Education & Health policy matters, he was invited by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Yousaf Raza Gillani to participate in a specially convened meeting of the Federal Cabinet and give suggestions on the National Education Policy. He was also part of the Youth Delegation on the study trip to UK, conjured by the British High Commission & Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
Dr. Umair is an ardent sportsman as well. Being an alumnus of Cadet College HasanAbdal afforded him the opportunities to excel in the field of sports. He has won many laurels in the sports of swimming, horse-riding, badminton, table tennis, cricket, basketball and chess at school & university level. Having won colors in the sport of basketball at University/School level, he has been invited to the National Basketball Team camps on numerous occasions. Currently, he captains a local cricket club in Islamabad.
